Ulysses S. Grant’s Home Historic Galena, Illinois is located on the Galena River (and very near the Mississippi River) about 160 miles west and north of Chicago, in the far northwest corner of the state. Known for its shopping (especially art galleries and antiques), spas, and golf courses, you’ll find a full calendar of special events in the area. Galena has many interesting bed and breakfast inns and hotels and numerous great restaurants and nightspots featuring live entertainment. Several historic sites and museums are worth visiting, including Ulysses S. Grant’s home. Galena is also home to three wineries.
Perhaps more importantly, Galena is surrounded by some great roads. Stagecoach Trail (County Rd 3) runs about 25 miles from Galena to Warren, IL, near the Wisconsin state line. Take Blackjack road south from Galena about 15 miles to Hanover, then East Hanover Road to Route 7 (which becomes Scenic Ridge Road) south to Savanna or north to Elizabeth. (see Recommended Roads for map) Our members recommend Poopy’s and the Iron Horse Social Club in Savanna, and Sharks Roadhouse in Elizabeth for lunch when you’re out touring. If you go north into Wisconsin, try Anton’s Saloon in New Diggings or head up the beautiful Great River Road to the Potosi Brewing Company in Potosi, WI.
Three options - first is to take route 20. Not a great ride but a straight shot and traffic is usually pretty light. Second is to pick up I-52 anywhere south of Dixon and take it to Savanna. From there take the Scenic Ridge Road and Blackjack Rd into Galena. The last option which is a bit out of the way is to take I-30 to Fulton then IL-84 to Savanna.
