Here’s a getaway recommended by members Jon and Doreen. Ride up to the Grand Traverse Bay area of the lower peninsula of Michigan. It’s beautiful country and there’s a lot to see and do. Although you can get there in less than a day, why not plan several nights and really enjoy a summer getaway? Be sure to plan your stay well in advance, especially if you will be there over a weekend in the summer, particularly during one of the many festivals. The annual Cherry Festival is July 7 – 14, 2012. The area has many nice resorts and inns as well as the usual chain establishments. Jon and Doreen recommend the Old Mission Inn. They also recommend that you stop first at a Visitor Center for suggested sight seeing. Do be sure to see the lighthouses and Sleeping Bear Dunes and perhaps some of the area wineries. There’s also a floating bed and breakfast! Sailing out of Traverse City, the 114-foot long, 62-passenger schooner Manitou offers three different 2-hour cruises every day of the week with specially catered picnic meals included during the evening sail. Experience the Microbrew & Pizza Cruise or Wine Tasting Cruise each featuring local fare. Or spend the night on the Floating Bed & Breakfast, Tuesday through Saturday.
Getting there: Recommended is to take the roads hugging the lake all the way up to the bay. Alternately, you can take the high speed ferry from Milwaukee to Muskegon, MI, then enjoy the ride up US 31 along the lake. There’s also a ferry that runs between Manitowoc, WI, and Ludington, MI. If you are short on time, you can always jump on the highway.
