JT Nesbitt takes a test drive with Jay Leno in LA upon arriving on a world record setting journey from NYC, powered entirely on CNG in the Magnolia Special.

In May this year, I rode from Downers Grove, down the Mississippi to meet JT Nesbitt of Bienville Studios in the French Quarter, New Orleans.  JT isn't a household name, but more than likely you've been impressed by his work.  A few years back, he was at Confederate Motorcycles where the team designed and fabricated breakthrough mototcycles including the G2 Hellcat and Wraith.  Publicity included the cover of the Robb Report, numerous movies, pop videos, and direct purchases by the likes of Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and other Hollywood elite.

This year, JT had just wrapped a nationally recognized design project on a natural gas powered car called the Magnolia Special--an absolutely stunning accomplishment of master-craftsmanship in automotive design. He set a world record traveling from New York to Los Angeles on CNG and capped it with an in-depth interview with Jay Leno.

My timing turned out to be extraordinary. JT was heading back to work at a local bar and planned to hang up his design and fabrication business indefinitely. No work was commissioned and his personal funds were running out. We talked and together hatched a plan to start something extraordinary. I asked him what he would do if he could take on any project he could with whatever funding was necessary. His answer:
"I would build a motorcycle to answer all the questions the Wraith asked." In short-hand, he would redefine the industry... again. We had to get to work.

The result is an approach that has never been seen and the goal is audacious. We are not starting a motorcycle company and we are not selling bikes. Instead, we are founding a non-profit called the American Design and Master-Craft Initiative (ADMCi) to commission the build. I have provided seed capital to start the project and my company, Manifest Digital, is providing digital services to help support marketing and communications.

We are raising a half-million dollars on beginning at a launch party September 15th to complete production on three ground-breaking prototypes. They'll be built without cutting one corner, drenched in carbon fiber and titanium. And, we're organizing a land-speed record attempt at the Bonneville Salt Flats in August, 2013. At 350hp wrapped in a 350lb package, we'll be riding one of the fastest, most powerful, breakthrough designs in the motorcycle industry in over a decade.

This project will establish an undeniable legacy for this artist, lay the foundation for a regional design language that New Orleans can celebrate, and put a sustainable foundation in motion to seek additional master craftsmen in the coming years. I'm looking forward to tackling future master-craft initiatives to meet new audacious, self-actualizing, and globally recognized goals. But for now, I've got some additional funds to raise and a world record to beat.

As a special preview and offer for Local Moto Hub subscribers we are offering a FREE item from our kickstarter package--before it is offered to the public! At your selection, you may choose to spend a weekend (Saturday, Sunday), a 'long weekend' (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday), or a week (Sunday to Sunday) living literally in JT's shop, working under his direction, and being part of what should become a world-famous build team. The package is valued at over $2,000. The only thing left to do is get more people involved in the excitement!

Safety CornerBe Prepared with a well-stocked Trauma Pack

Vicki Sanfilipo from Accident Scene Management, Inc., the folks who bring us certified Motorcycle Trauma certification classes, has some recommendations for what you should carry in your Trauma Pack.  Vicki says, “At ASMI classes, we encourage you to carry a ‘Trauma Pack’.  If you already have a first aid kit, you might find that you just need to add a few things to make your kit better.  At the very least, you should be sure your kit has the following:

  • 2 pair nitrile gloves
  • Trauma shears
  • Rescue breathing barrier
  • 4 packages sterile 4x4 gauze
  • 3-inch roll gauze
  • Medical tape – 1 inch wide
  • Something to write on
  • Something to write with
  • Hand sanitizer

Once you have these essential supplies, you can then consider adding other helpful items like:

  • LED or battery-less flashlight
  • Cold pack
  • Sterile saline
  • Emergency foil blanket

Vicki has more suggestions and explanation and concludes with, “Tools without knowledge might be helpful, but learning how to respond and then carrying adequate tools are the best ways to BE PREPARED!  We’re with you, Vicki, and proudly display our ‘Crash Course for the Motorcyclist’ Certification of Class Completion.
